From Codex to Xcode - Book Design

A book as a medium to contain and transmit information is a universal object; it has roots in every culture around the world and has taken countless forms from the wax tablets to scrolling manuscript to digital printing to e-books. These books are personal exploration of the relationship between materiality and virtuality. It is a set of 4 blank books, each of them hand crafted by me. Every book features a different method of bookbinding from the beginning of book binding focusing in Europe. The set was inspired by my curiosity about the origin and future of one of my favorite and influential objects: the book.

With special thanks to Benjamin Critton.

Borrowing from the four era’s traditions and translating them into modern trends, I created a unique set of books that embraces modern design’s simplicity while retaining its root from the ancient times. The books’ pure white inside pages has drawn inspiration from the dominant white color of architectural interiors in the Baroque period and especially the Rococo style that followed it in the 18th century. The white fabric covers refer to the white color being the universal color of both men and women's underwear and of sheets in the 18th and 19th century. It was unthinkable to have sheets or underwear of any other color. The reason was simple; the manner of washing linen in boiling water caused colors to fade. When linen was worn out, it was collected and turned into high-quality paper.
